G Adventures: Day of the Dead in Mexico City
Day 1: Mexico City
Arrive at any time.
Day of the Dead takes place between October 31 and November 2 and is a celebration and remembrance of the deceased. Families will build private altars and bring large feasts to cemeteries, to be with the souls of the departed. It is believed that the souls will come back to visit and take part in the celebrations. Some of the “ofrendas” (altars) are very elaborate and include sugar skulls and marigold flowers. In most regions, the souls of infants and children are honoured on November 1. Adults are remembered on November 2. It is generally a festive rather than somber gathering.
Day 2: Mexico City
Get into the Día de Muertos spirit with a local walking tour through the vibrant neighborhoods of Roma and Condesa, then spend the afternoon exploring Mexico City at your own pace and taking in the sights and energy of its iconic Día de Muertos parade.
Day 3: Mexico City
Explore Mexico City’s historic centre with your CEO, taking in the iconic Zócalo and learning about the city’s Día de Muertos traditions. Continue to Mercado de Jamaica, where you’ll meet local vendors, discover ceremonial objects and seasonal preparations, and taste traditional antojitos and treats connected to the celebration.

Travel to Xochimilco and spend the day exploring its living cultural heritage with Colectivo Mitote, a local Planeterra project. Visit one of the oldest and most sustainable chinampas in the area and learn how this ancient farming system continues to shape life and traditions in Xochimilco today.
